DARIO FRANCHITTI
Dario Franchitti is a Scottish former racing driver, who is currently a Team Advisor for the Chip Ganassi Indycar Team and is a co-commentator for the FIA Formula E Championship.
After a successful start to his motorsport career, racing in Europe in single seaters and then DTM, Dario Franchitti moved his career to the States in 1997 where he went on to become the most successful British racing driver in American motor racing history.
From arriving in the US in 1997, Dario recorded 31 wins, 33 pole positions, 119 Top-5 finishes, 167 Top-10 finishes and an impressive 265 career starts.
In 2007 he won the IndyCar Driver Championship with Andretti Green Racing and also won the Indianapolis 500, becoming only the second Scottish driver to do so since Jim Clark in 1965. Dario then joined Target Chip Ganassi Racing and in 2010 he won the IndyCar Series Driver Championship and the Indianapolis 500 for a second time. In 2012, he became the 10th driver in the 100-year history of the Brickyard to win the Indianapolis 500 three times. During his time with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, Dario delivered three consecutive Verizon IndyCar Series titles (2009-2011).
Following serious injuries suffered in a crash at the Houston GP in October 2013, Dario retired from competition and has remained with the Chip Ganassi IndyCar Team as Team Advisor ever since. Dario has also acted as co-commentator for the FIA Formula E Championship ever since the series began in 2014.
Dario was awarded the MBE for his services to Motorsport and was presented with the Member of the Order of the British Empire medal on the 25th November 2014 by the Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace.
